For Our Connecticut Clients: Speed Cameras Are Here
A fast-moving new CT enforcement program is showing up in more towns each month here’s what it means for you and your household.
What’s Changing
For our Connecticut clients: if you’ve driven through a school zone or highway work zone lately, there’s a good chance a camera got a look at your speed. Automated speed enforcement has expanded fast this year more than 15 CT towns now have cameras live, including Fairfield, Milford, Middletown, and Washington, with West Hartford, Wethersfield, and Greenwich on the way. The state also activated cameras in highway work zones this summer.
How It Works
Cameras clock any vehicle going 10 mph or more over the posted limit. A trained employee or officer reviews the photo and speed data before anything gets mailed out, it’s not fully automatic. If a violation is confirmed, a citation goes to whoever the vehicle is registered to, regardless of who was actually driving. Worth remembering if you share a car with a teen driver or family member.
What It Costs
Most towns are charging $50 for a first offense and $75 for each one after that, plus a $15 processing fee. Highway work zone cameras run a flat $75 per violation. Some towns issue a warning-only grace period before fines kick in.
Does it hurt your insurance?
As currently written into Connecticut law, these are civil fines not moving violations. They don’t add points to your license and don’t get reported to your insurance carrier, so they shouldn’t trigger a rate increase the way a police issued speeding ticket would. That could change as the programs mature, but for now, a camera ticket stays off your driving record and loss history.
Can You Fight It?
Yes. Every town running this program is required to offer an appeal process, usually printed right on the citation. Common grounds for a successful appeal include an unclear photo of the plate or vehicle, incorrect posted speed limit signage, or proof that someone else was driving. If you get a citation, check the deadline on the notice appeal windows are typically short.
The Bottom Line
Camera tickets aren’t an insurance issue today, but they’re a real cost if you’re regularly driving through school zones or highway work zones. Worth a reminder to everyone in the household and, if you run a business with vehicles on the road, to your team as well.
